Lausanne during the festive seasonBy My-Lausanne
The first Advent weekend is upon us! It’s already time to light the first candle and begin the Christmas countdown. What could you do to make the most of this magical time of the year? We guide you through the maze of unmissable Christmas season events in Lausanne.
Our Christmassy adventure can only begin by admiring the various shop windows of Lausanne boutiques. From small independent ones to department stores, everyone pitches in to dress their window in the most original way. We begin at the Place Saint-Laurent before heading to the Place de la Palud via the Rue Saint-Laurent. Then, off towards the Rue Saint-François and the Rue de Bourg for a good overview of the prettiest displays.
The festive season goes hand in hand with Christmas markets. The one in Lausanne answers to the name of Bô Noël and has been listed as one of the five most beautiful markets in Europe. It’s not surprising. Since it was created five years ago, it has kept on improving and distinguishing itself through its local and eco-responsible approach. And there are actually five markets in one: the Athletes’ Market (in collaboration with the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games) at Bel-Air, the Festive Market at Saint-François, the Creators’ Market at Place Pépinet, the Terroir Market at Place de l’Europe and the Village of “Flottins” (sculptures made of driftwood) at Place Centrale. Suffice it to say there’s got to be one for you! As for us, we love wandering from one world to another and let ourselves be carried away by the atmosphere.
As the night sets in, it’s the ideal moment to discover the ten artworks of Lausanne Lumières coming to life in different locations of the town, as they do every year. For instance, you can’t miss Pocket, the installation on the Flon footbridge that pays tribute to the old pocket lights that we all know or the splendid illumination of Lausanne Cathedral’s Montfalcon Gothic portal. Quartz, a monumental stone that lords over the Riponne Fountain, won’t fail to move you and might well hypnotise you all night.
After having wandered the city streets, it’s now time for a little warm-up break! Whether you prefer Christmas tea, traditional mulled wine or with a shot of amaretto, let’s meet under the tents and tens of lanterns in Place de l’Europe for a magical time!
A fondue in an unusual location
Fondue is THE winter meal! A shared experience with friends and family. An ever so Swiss dish that’s the perfect winter evening warmer. For an original twist, why not eat your fondue in a proper gondola?! It’s happening on the terrace of the Café du Grütli! Skiing weekend atmosphere guaranteed without leaving Lausanne! Now isn’t that the best?
Lausanne is decidedly a town that knows how to renew itself from year to year and always offers something to please everyone. We each experience the festive season in our own way. Tell us about your own traditions and favourite activities!
